Air Support: Supporting Staff with a Psychological First Aid Response to Acute Incidents HNELHD - 16 February 2022 at 12:30pm (AEDT)

Existing employee support services within HNELHD are challenged to consistently provide the early response that is needed for staff who experience traumatic events or acute incidents, particularly after hours.
This inconsistency may place staff at risk of developing unhealthy psychological responses from cumulative exposure to events that may be disturbing and affect them emotionally and/or physically.

International clinical practice guidelines for the management of psychological trauma recommend Psychological First Aid (PFA) as an early intervention within high risk organisational settings where exposure to acute incidents is either possible or predictable in the workplace.

“The effectiveness of providing Psychological First Aid (PFA) in the healthcare context requires a consistent, coordinated and well-managed peer-support approach with executive sponsorship and culturally appropriate and safe engagement” (Forbes, et al., 2011)

AIR Support includes timely peer-support responses provided by AIR Delegates, following acute incidents, to prevent ongoing psychological trauma.
AIR Delegates are staff with effective interpersonal skills who volunteer, have manager support and are trained in PFA.
